Almost every week, cyclists and pedestrians are killed or injured in accidents involving commercial vehicles. Many vulnerable road users and especially cyclists are unaware of the blind spot on the passenger side of trucks. This leads to serious accidents when overlooked by the driver.
To combat this problem, the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) in Berlin has appointed representatives from the freight and logistics industry, cycling and road safety associations and the police
"Action turn assistant" invited. It is planned to equip all trucks over 7.5 t with a warning system consisting of a side camera and a side sensor, which alerts the driver to road users in the blind spot on the passenger side - which is especially important when turning right. Turn-off assistants are not yet mandatory, but this is likely to change in a few years, as the BMVI is pushing for compulsory retrofitting of trucks with dead-angle technology. Several major supermarkets and logistics companies, as official partners of the BMVI campaign, have already installed the Brigade turn-off assistant in their trucks; numerous other companies want to follow this example.
Brigade has been pioneering for many years for more safety when turning. In London, in 2012, a specification of the construction site vehicles with turn-off assistance was required. Following this initiative, numerous other organizations and companies in the haulage and construction industry throughout Europe also introduced turnaround assistants.
In addition to the existing back-up warning program, Monark has also been a distributor for BRIGADE products since 2015 - one of the leading manufacturers of security systems.
